materials (water, mineral elements, etc.) through different woodland
ecosystems. Our present knowledge of the quantitative aspects of the
processes concerned in forest dynamics are unfortunately far too scanty
and disjointed, yet these processes constitute an expression of the
woodland ecosystem perhaps more significant than the trees themselves.
Some of the processes that need to be considered in studies of woodland
ecosystems are illustrated in Fig. 1.
