substance. The colchicine does not contribute to the change of activity.
This corresponds to the data of Fig. 8. The behaviour of the activity in
the stumps and in the non-amputated, treated, controls is unexpected.
In contrast to the reactions of the corresponding pieces to single
substances there is here a steady increase until the 22nd day. We
consider this phenomenon as a synergistic effect of the combined
solution upon the catheptic activity. In this case it cannot be a question
of a random result because we obtained the same results in two series
carried out at an interval of 4 months. Both are plotted together in
Fig. 10.

These new results substantiate our contention that combined solutions
of morphostatic substances can produce new effects which are not brought
about by treatment with single substances. A single substance may
modify only a few steps of a partial process whereas a combined treatment might modify several metabolic pathways at the same time. This
combined effect can presumably influence, to a high degree, the morphogenetic potential of metabolism which is carrying the integrated complex of regenerative activities. At present our intention is to test new
synergistic combinations of inhibitory substances and to determine their
action upon the catheptic activity in the regenerates. The new experi-
