assumption of the cytoplasmic axes does not conflict with the fact that
the eventual differentiation takes place in the periphery.
As regards the unicellular animals, Sonneborn (1963) has shown that
in Paramecium the cortical layer of the cytoplasm contains a patch
which is transmitted to the offspring independently of the nucleus and
exerts a determining effect on differentiation. Thus the contribution of
the cytoplasmic structure to hereditary characteristics seems to be a
phenomenon of general importance in biology.
