exhibit change—in quantity, quality, and/or activity—in RS cells as
compared to OC cells.
Not all of these occurrences are simultaneous. Some of them are first
detectable in the early stages of exponential growth and cease long
before it ends. Others commence later on and do not come to a halt
until after active growth has stopped. And then again, some transformations do not begin until the exponential phase of growth has

ended. With synchronized, single-generation cultures, these
fluctuating
metabolic patterns operating during exponential growth can be
established quantitatively, and then examined in relation to the
processes of morphological differentiation which will follow. We will
select a few examples from studies made so far to illustrate the
point.
A pertinent question which arises immediately is this: in molecular
terms, what is the very first change to occur in a spore as it begins
development along the RS path, as compared to what would have
happened if it had developed along the OC path? The answer, were it
known with certainty—which of course it is not—would provide an
ideal cornerstone upon which to build investigations of the bicarbonate
trigger mechanism. We are forced therefore, to ask the next best
