The enzymes of the second group have a low activity, relatively
constant during the cleavage but increasing in the advanced blastula or
during gastrulation. Lithium ions inhibit the rise in activity of these
enzymes. This second group includes Cholinesterase (Augustinsson and
Gustafson, 1949), malic and succinic dehydrogenases, glutaminase I
(Fig. 12), cathepsin II and apyrase (Gustafson and Hasselberg, 1951).
