(Seeliger 1961). There also seem to be overlapping antigens connecting
Listeria with motile corynebacteria. Haemosensitising substances of Listeria
and /I-haemolytic streptococci may also be’ interrelated and are considered
to be an important source of cross-reactions (Seeliger, 1961). The serological
cross-reactions between L. monocytogenes and a great number of Grampositive bacterial species may be explained by the presence of a non-species
specific antigen which is common to many Gram-positive organisms
(cit. Seeliger, 1961).
These findings call for attention and caution. Serological tests alone are
not a sufficient criterion for the diagnosis of Listeria, but a reliable help
only in combination with cultural and biochemical reactions.
