IX. IDENTIFICATION OF MYCOPLASMAS
425
4. Interpretation and comments
Results are usually recorded as the number of bands which develop
between each antigen and the antiserum well. If the precipitin lines are
well resolved it may be possible to assign a letter or number to each line and
to construct an antigenic formula for an organism.
With strains belonging to the same species, most if not all of the lines
produced by the homologous strain will, under optimal conditions, also
be given by the heterologous strains, the common lines fusing in reactions
of identity.
A general discussion of immunodiffusion is presented in Volume SA of
this Series (Oakely, 1971).
