1. Types 1 and 2, types 3 and 2, types 7, 12, and 13, types 8 and 21, types 14 and 15 and types 16 and 17 cross-agglutinate. Their
sera are therefore absorbed by the bacteria of the cross-reacting type.
2. The bacteria of type 18 are co-agglutinated by type 2 sera, and the bacteria of type 11 by the sera of type 10. The sera of these
types are therefore absorbed by the bacteria of the cross-reacting type.
3. Strains of type 9 are co-agglutinated by type 3 sera. Since absorption of type 9 sera by type 3 cells removes most of the agglutinins of these sera, we omit this absorption and consider strains agglutinated by type 9 and type 3 sera as belonging to type 9, whereas
bacteria agglutinated only by type 3 sera are identified as type 3.
4. Strains of type 43 often cross-agglutinate with type 20 sera. Since absorption of type 43 sera by type 20 strains removes most of
the agglutinins of these sera, we omit this absorption and consider strains agglutinated by type 43 and type 20 as belonging to type
43, whereas strains of type 20 are agglutinated by only type 20 sera and are identified as type 20.
5. Type 5 has been excluded from the typing procedure because of its rare occurrence. (Type 5 has not been observed in human
infections but only in animals.)
Antisera and reference strains for all serotypes can be obtained from National Jewish Hospital and Research Center, 3800 East
Colfax Avenue, Denver, Colorado 80206, U S A . The requested materials are provided free of charge under a contract authorised by
the U.S.A. National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland.
