identification of new serotypes and by continued improvement of FA
reagents. Studies on the antigenic make-up o f Actinomyces (Holmberg et al.,
1975; Bowden et al., 1976) will help to identify the species and serotype
specific antigens and show which of these are involved in the FA reaction.
With this information, it should be possible to produce improved reagents
using antiserum made against purified antigens.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
The author would like to express her appreciation to Dr John M. Slack for the
many years of active collaboration on studies with Actinomyces and for his help
in the preparation of the manuscript. Studies on Actinomyces at West Virginia
University were supported in part by Public Health Service grants A1-01801
from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease and DE-02675 from
the National Institute of Dental Research.
