The Hammarstrom (1949) phages are wild strains for which the origin of each is
not known. We know only that they were selected from a collection of 37 phages
derived from human (19) and animal (14) faeces, sewage (5), and a lysogenic
bacterial strain (1).

Poured in 9 cm diameter plates, 25 ml in each. The plates are left at
room temperature overnight till use, preferably on the day after production.
(c) Storage of bacteria. The media as described for S. Jlexneri (side supra)
or deep agar (1 % agar) are suitable.
(d) Subcultisation media. For starter cultures before typing, endo-agar is
recommended to ensure that the colonies are in phase 11.
(e) Soft agarfor pantitation. As (b), typing agar, with only 0.6% agar.
