2. International typing set
The phages of Hammarstrom constitute the core of the proposed international phage typing set for S. sonnei (Kallings and Sjoberg, 1975). A
basic set is selected from the phages: I, 11, 111, IV, IVA, V, VI, VII,VIII,
VIIIA, IX, X, XI, XII, F12, and 766. In Table XIV, the morphology,
phage serotype, host-propagating strain, relative lytic activity, and source
of the 16 phages are indicated. Figures 4 and 5 show plaques and viron
morphology of the phages in the proposed set. Several phages are not
specific for S. sonnei but also attack Salmonella, E. coli, and Arizona
(Junghans, 1961). Of particular interest is the fact that phage XI1 lyses the
