IV. INVESTIGATION OF C. DIPHTHERIAE
155
Phage (a) 15542/234 originates from the starch fermenting C. ulcerans
lysogenic strain no. 15542 Di-tox+ (diphtherial toxin producer), isolated in
Romania from humans.
Phage (b) 213 L/40 c was isolated from the starch fermenting C. ulcerans
213 L Di-toxf, reference strain (W. H. H. Jebb).
Phage (c) 16259/40 c, originates from the starch fermenting C. ulcerans
16259 Di-toxf, Romanian wild strain of human origin.
Phage (d) 210 L/16 L was isolated from a non-starch fermenting C.
ulcerans 210 L Di-tox+, collection strain (W. H. H. Jebb).
Phage (g) 9304/984 was isolated from the starch-fermenting C. ulcerans
9304 Di-tox-, Romanian wild strain of human origin.
Phage (h) 984/984 was isolated from starch-fermenting C. ulcerans
984 Di-toxf, reference strain (Henriksen, C. ulcerans 1605).
76 c is a diphtherial phage, originating from the 76 c C. dz$htheriae
gravis Di-tox+ strain, equine, restricted in C. ovis 21 strain.

C. ovis 21, reference strain (Dr Zaki), propagation strain for phage 76.
C. Phage typing
Phage typing in C. ulcerans and C. ovis is performed according to the
technique described by Saragea and Maximescu (1964) and used in the
original and additional phage typing of C. dz$htheriae strains. Media and
techniques used for multiplication of phages and for typing are the same as
for C. diphtheriae using heart broth and brain heart agar.
XII. CHECKING LYSOGENICITY I N CORYNEBACTERIA
A. Induction of lysogenic phages in shaken cultures
1. Preparation of lysates
An overnight Loeffler slant culture of the strain to be tested is inoculated
