knowledge. This series deals primarily with engineering solutions, but since
technical feasibility alone does not guarantee adoption of any scheme,
volumes dealing with selected other aspects of the wide spectrum of water
management are also planned.
The series is open-ended because the development of ever more sophisticated industries and life patterns continuously creates new water pollution
problems and, hopefully, their solutions. By dealing with water quality
it is designed to encourage its users to contribute to the quality of life in
general.
This first volume by Professors Himmelblau and O'Laoghaire is particularly suitable to open the series, because it deals with planning for maximum
multiuse of water resources. We welcome the reader to this series and hope
that he will find the most current information in this volume and in the
volumes to come.
