maximum food intake was at 35°C. It therefore appears that the system
is attuned to a cyclical daily pattern of temperature, combining maximum
intake at high temperature with greater conversion efficiencies at lower
thermal levels.
It is pertinent to recall that cyclic rather than constant conditions also
appear to enhance tolerances to various environmental extremes, through
acclimation. This seems an appropriate theme on which to end a discussion of fishes in deserts.
V. Addendum
Since completion of this chapter there has been considerable new information published that should be examined by the serious student. For example, the six-volume series on "Fish Physiology," only partially published
during the writing phase of this effort, has now been completed. In addition, some excellent reference books, as well as much recent information
pertinent to desert fishes, have been published in such places as Copeia,
Transactions of the American Fisheries Society, Evolution, Scientific
American, Southwestern Naturalist, California Fish and Game, Occasional
Papers San Diego Natural History Society, Australian Journal of Marine
and Freshwater Research, and Journal Arizona Academy of Science.
