"Desert Biology" is dedicated to the memory of Dr.
John C. Sinclair, formerly Professor Emeritus of anatomy
at the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston,
Texas, where I taught biochemistry to medical students
and where I met John. John Sinclair was an extraordinary
individual—a truly "Renaissance Man." He was desert
rat, porpoise and whale embryologist, weather physicist,
human (humane) anatomist, and poet. A special reading
of his poems, now published by the University of Texas
Press, was held in our home here in Washington, and our
guests attended every word. He lived as a man, scientist,
and humanitarian.
