WIND SPEED (m roc-’)
tic;. 5. V;iii;ittoil of /i with wind speed tinder iirhan and rural condiiions. with the vertical
.iis extending oiie st;iiid:ird dctiation o f the mean either ride of the mean value. The small
circles reprcsriit the altenipt to normalize for urban effects (see text). Indicated are the mean /{
valiies obtained froin earlier frec-Routing halloon exprimcnts at Brookhawn (R). Las Vepas
(LV), and Cardington (C’),
h. ..
mean wind specds determined from carlier free-hating balloon experiments
at Brookhaven (H), Ncw York (Giflord, 1955). Las Vegas (LV), andcardingt o n (C). With tho above assumption. the mean Cardington value falls exactly
on the trend of /j with wind speed obtained at Oklahoma City.
Figure 6 illustrates the variation of /I with vertical turbulence intensity
(measured at a height of 355 m on the tower), as determined from individual
1,;igriingian Eulcrian spcctral comparisons. Since fi is found to increase with
dccrcase in root mcan square vertical velocity (0,) at a given wind speed (for
exnniple, /I incrcases by 40 ‘’L as c,, decreases from 1.6 to 0.8 m sec- at a
wind speed of 13 ni sec I ) . 11 would be cxpected to be quite sensitive to
vcrtical turhulence intctisity (r.r,,,/V), and Fig. 6 shows that this is indeed the
casc. As wilh wind specd. there is a discontinuous jump in the absolute value
of /I betwecn urban and rural areas, but again the percentage change in 1) per
unit (.01) increase or decrease in vertical turbulence intensity remains nearly
the same, with average valucs of 13 and 1 1 9:, in urban and rural areas.
