point of view it is desirable to do so. In many cases, however, there is likely
to be a residual diffusive effect which one has to represent empirically by a
suitable parameter. It is suggested that, in conditions similar to those of the
experiments described in this paper, the lateral diffusion velocity B is a more
useful parameter than the coefficient of eddy diffusion K,, in that the range
of values of E is much less than that of K, . The physical interpretation of B
remains uncertain, although some possible contributory effects have been
discussed above.
