smaller scale than that in the horizontal.
9. DISCUSION
The example given above is an indication of the variability of diffusion
patterns even when the overall conditions of flow appear to be in anapproximately steady state. Occasions during which the tidal current was changing
rapidly in speed or direction, or when wind-induced shear was obviously
producing a distortion of the plume, have been excluded from the foregoing
analyses.
The present results may be compared with some other recent data obtained in similar conditions. Using the continuous discharge method near
