they contain nodular anhydrite (replaced by gypsum near the surface) and salt pseudomorphs (see Fig. 5.34). The Purbeck Beds are interpreted as sabkha deposits laid down
in hypersaline and brackish lagoons. Locally the Purbeck Beds contain a spectacular
evaporite collapse breccia, termed the "Broken Beds." These only occur in the rollover
zone of a major growth fault. They are locally contorted into folds that are overturned
toward the fault plane (Fig. 8.44). It appears that, not only may the extent of the sabkha
have been restricted by the rollover hollow, but also that the northerly paleoslope may
have controlled the movement of this solution collapse breccia (Selley and Stoneley,
1987).
