(Upper) Pumice pebbles from Cape Agulhas, the southernmost part of Africa, coin is 2 cm in diameter.
These pebbles geochemically match the ejectamenta of the 27 May 1883 eruption of Krakatoa in the Sunda
Straits between Java and Sumatra. (Frick, C. and Kent, L. E., 1984. Drift pumice in the Indian and Atlantic
Oceans. Trans. Geol. Soc. South Africa, 87,19-33.) Contemporary accounts describe the Indian Ocean covered with pumice-bergs, some with their own little ecosystems. Glorious sunsets were enjoyed worldwide for
years, due to volcanic dust in the upper atmosphere. (Lower) Map showing the voyage of the Cape Agulhas
pumice pebbles, some 15,000 km. Now that is sediment transport.
