Color plate 6 A very large, residual dendritic bloom lying far to the west of Mauretania shown in SeaWiFS
imagery; this represents the final stages of a major upwelling event that occurred farther to the north than
the small active bloom seen in the bight to the north of Cape Verde.

Color plate 7 A typical case of the apparently high chlorophyll encircling the retroflection of shelf water to
the north of the Amazon mouth derived from MODIS-Aqua data; it is yet to be established to what extent
this represents CDOM entrained from the shelf water, or to what extent it represents production in situ
related to eddy dynamics. Farther to the south, equatorial Rossby waves induce some degree of chlorophyll
enhancement, terminating near the continent.
