Physical-chemical and bacteriological quality of coastal waters Ain Benian - Bab
El Oued (Wilaya of Algiers)
Abstract
The intensity of human activities (economic activity, tourism, fishing, industry …),
demographic pressure and the unconsciousness of the populations on the littoral environments
have contributed to making these environments, the marine fauna and flora more sensitive and
cause a degradation of the quality of the waters.
This study focuses on the evaluation of the physico-chemical quality and
bacteriological of the waters of the littoral zone is Ain Benian -Bab El Oued and an area of
Sidi Fredj, whose objective to study the vulnerability of these areas in the face of the pollution
of type physical, chemical, and biological.
The physico-chemical study has allowed the in situ measurement of the temperature,
dissolved oxygen, salinity and pH. The analysis of material in suspension (MIS), particulate
organic matter (POM), inorganic matter Particulate (IMP), chlorophyll and phéopigment has
and the nutrient salts (nitrate, nitrite, ammonium, phosphate and silicate). The bacteriological
study, has concerned the germs indicators of fecal contamination (fecal coliform, Total and
fecal streptococci) and pathogenic bacteria that accompany these germs (Salmonella).
The physicochemical analysis has shown that the results obtained from the in situ
measurement of dissolved oxygen are lower than the national standard therefore a under
oxygen saturation. The concentrations of nutrient salts (nitrate and ammonium) are important,
but they are less than the standard.
As regards the bacteriological analysis, the majority of the stations of the area of Sidi
Fredj and area of Bab el Oued have high rates in germs indicators of fecal contamination
(above the value imperative), compared to the area of Ain Benian, absence of pathogenic
bacteria (Salmonella) in the Stations Analyzed.
The Multiparametric analysis has highlighted that the origin of the pollution in the
three areas (Ain Benian, Bab El Oued and Sidi Fredj) is bacteriological, and they have the
same level of pollution.
According to the results obtained from the analysis physico-chemical and
bacteriological of these three areas, the area of Ain Benian is less polluted that the area of Bab
el Oued and the area of Sidi Fredj are the more polluted.
Key words: physico-chemical quality, bacteriological, the coastal waters Ain BenianBab El Oued.
