Abstract
Remember that the coastal zone is where all the demographic, economic and ecological pressures that
result in many of the latter deterioration.
The concept of Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) then appears before the need to take
into account the complex relationships between human activities and the coastal environment, in order
to achieve the goal of sustainable development in these areas. However, the implementation of these
concepts requires a comprehensive description of the environment and its rules of operation and a
disciplinary procedure for the analysis of the problems of development and information exchange. To
do this, it is necessary to collect, manage, process and distribute a considerable amount of attribute
data and geo-referenced. The Geographic Information System (GIS) is a geo-informatics tool
relatively well adapted to meet the needs expressed above. Storage capacity, maintenance,
consultation, dissemination and analysis make it a powerful tool for all management and research
activities.
After a general presentation of the two pillars (ICZM and GIS) that underlie this work, we have
developed a model of a database showing its importance by examples of monitoring applications
indicators ICZM and assessment of natural and industrial hazards in the central Algeria.
Algeria does not yet have a complete database contained land-sea that can claim to approach an
integrated coastal zone management.
Our research work is therefore a first step in the field of GIS for coastal areas to make information on
the continent and navy available in the same source and the same reference in this context, the main
results of our study can be summarized as follows:
• A presentation of the Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) and geographic information
systems (GIS)
In this section we describe the expectations and constraints of the most important role to be
played in a GIS ICZM.
• A presentation of the pilot area:
In this section we have a description of the three bays zone (Bou Ismail, Algiers, Zemmouri)
we have implemented our prototype GIS
• Development of a methodology for implementation of the GIS database:
Through a study of the needs of some coastal areas management agencies including maritime
services DTP Algiers, Boumerdes and Tipaza we have established a conceptual model,
physics and data processing, later we set up a database SIG_BAZ (GIS bays Bou Ismail,
Algiers and Zemmouri)
• Contribution of GIS for the coastal zone:
In this section we have shown, through some real examples of applications (monitoring of
indicators of ICZM, simulation of natural and industrial risks), the potential of GIS and
DBMS Data Base Management System for integrated management coastal areas as well as
risk prevention and ecosystem protection.
