Abstract
Natural radioactivity has been around for billions of years in different environmental
compartments. Also after the second world and little with the advent of the nuclear industry,
artificial radioactivity was introduced into the environment.
To understand the interaction and behavior of radionuclide’s in the marine environment we
have two sediments cores collected on 12 and 13 May 2011 on board the boat Baba Arroudj
opposite the mouth of the valley Mazafran (Bay of Bou-Ismail) through a tube core barrel
type "UWITEC". Packaging techniques and sample analysis are those in the laboratory of
Radiological Impacts and laboratory of mineralogy in the Nuclear Research Center of Algiers.
Interest Radioactive elements are identified in the order of eight: plumb -210, uranium-238,
plumb 212, plumb 214, bismuth-214, cesium-137, actinium-228 and potassium 40.
Eleven chemical components of sediments from the Carrot I are identified and measured by
X-ray fluorescence. These minerals are, in order of abundance: SiO 2 , Al 2 O3, CaO, Fe 2 O 3 ,
MgO, K 2 O, Na 2 O, TiO 2 , SO 3 , P 2 O 5 and finally MnO. Spectra mineralogical analyzes indicate
the presence of Quartz, Calcite, and types of clays.
