Volume 2 focuses on the effects toxic microaigae and their bioactive products exert on living systems and human activities. The most advanced information regarding the molecular mechanisms of action of toxins is presented, providing the background to approach the responses found in animals and humans exposed to microalgal toxins, as well as the environmental effects of harmful algal blooms. The picture is completed by the description of initiatives to manage the risks posed by toxic microaigae, including strategies for the detoxification of contaminated seafood and the development of models to predict harmful algal blooms and their dynamics. The complexity of risk management in the field is presented from a global perspective, by highlighting major issues faced in regions of primary economic importance with regard to the production and commercialization of seafood.
