This volume summarises recent developments and possible future directions for small molecule X-ray crystallography. It reviews specific areas of crystallography which are rapidly developing and places them in a historical context. The interdisciplinary nature of the technique is emphasised throughout. It introduces and describes the chemical crystallographic and synchrotron facilities which have been at the cutting edge of the subject in recent decades. The introduction of new computer-based algorithms has proved to be very influential and stimulated and accelerated the growth of new areas of science. The challenges which will arise from the acquisition of ever larger databases are considered and the potential impact of artificial intelligence techniques stressed. Recent advances in the refinement and analysis of X-ray crystal structures are highlighted. In addition the recent developments in time resolved single crystal X-ray crystallography are discussed. Recent years have demonstrated how this technique has provided important mechanistic information on solid-state reactions and complements information from traditional spectroscopic measurements. The volume highlights how the prospect of being able to routinely "watch" chemical processes as they occur provides an exciting possibility for the future. Recent advances in X-ray sources and detectors that have also contributed to the possibility of dynamic single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods are presented. The coupling of crystallography and quantum chemical calculations provides detailed information about electron distributions in crystals and has resulted in a more detailed understanding of chemical bonding. The volume will be of interest to chemists and crystallographers with an interest in the synthesis, characterisation and physical and catalytic properties of solid-state materials. Postgraduate students entering the field will benefit from a historical introduction to the subject and a description of those techniques which are currently used. Since X-ray crystallography is used so widely in modern chemistry it will serve to alert senior chemists to those developments which will become routine in coming decades. It will also be of interest to the broad community of computational chemists who study chemical systems.

A comprehensive guide to 5G security

5G cellular networks promise not only an enhancement of radio access technology but also to complete the trajectory to connecting billions of people and things, whether on motion or attached to an infrastructure. By reducing the cost and efforts to connect people and things, it will not only help accelerate economic growth across various industries and the public sector, but will also provide a platform based on cloud computing and IoT (Internet of Things) for many critical infrastructures that offer important utility, transportation and public safety services. It is currently, and will be for the next decade, the prime focus of research and development activities across multiple countries and continents, and the outcome sought will go beyond basic user connectivity services, also addressing opportunities to simplify networks and the deployment of new services.
As 5G networks become pervasive and foundational components of personal, public and enterprise systems, possibly replacing dedicated and isolated networks. Maintaining
the confidentiality, integrity and availability of these networks will be among the key design and implementation challenges. Universal connectivity is attractive to both the intended beneficiaries of these networks likewise to the bad actors. They can wreak havoc from afar, across different industries and causing financial, privacy, safety and national security harms.

Christian Knittl-Frank reports on the development of a novel synthetic route to the naturally occurring polyhydroxylated oleanane, hederagonic acid. Polyhydroxylated oleananes are a vast family of naturally occurring triterpenoids with versatile biological activities. A low commercial availability combined with high prices make these molecules interesting targets in natural product synthesis. The developed synthetic approach starts from oleanolic acid, a cheap material that is commercially available in bulk quantities. It features several multi-step one-pot reactions, allowing a minimization of the number of steps and reducing the preparative effort. Importantly, catalytic C–H functionalization was achieved at unusually low temperatures. Hederagonic acid was thus prepared in as little as four steps, resulting in the shortest semisynthesis of this oleanane to date. Contents Hederagonic Acid and C−H Activation; Optimization of the Synthetic Sequence Final Synthetic Route to Hederagonic Acid Experimental Section Target Groups Scientists and students in the field of organic chemistry, especially natural product synthesis The Author Christian Knittl-Frank is currently pursuing his PhD studies, focusing on natural product synthesis and synthetic methodology, at the Department of Organic Chemistry, University of Vienna, Austria. He is part of the MolTag doctoral program that aims to development new molecular drugs targeting ion channels. .

This dictionary was originally derived from the Concise Science Dictionary, first published by Oxford University Press in 1984 (fifth edition, retitled Dictionary of Science, 2005). It consisted of all the entries relating to chemistry in this dictionary, including physical chemistry, as well as many of the terms used in biochemistry. Subsequent editions included special feature articles on important topics as well as several chronologies tracing the history of some topics and short biographical entries on the chemists and other scientists who have been responsible for the development of the subject. For this sixth
edition the text has been fully revised and some entries have been substantially expanded. In addition over 350 new entries have been added
covering all branches of the subject. The coverage of certain fields, in particular biochemistry, forensic chemistry, and chemoinformatics, has been
expanded. A further improvement has been the inclusion of about 90 additional chemical structures.

To cope with the new running conditions in the ALICE experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, a new integrated circuit named SAMPA has been created that can process 32 analogue channels, convert them to digital, perform filtering and compression, and transmit the data on high speed links to the data acquisition system. The main purpose of this work is to specify, design, test and verify the digital signal processing part of the SAMPA device to accommodate the requirements of the detectors involved. Innovative solutions have been employed to reduce the bandwidth required by the detectors, as well as adaptations to ease data handling later in the processing chain. The new SAMPA device was built to replace two existing circuits, in addition to reducing the current consumption, and doubling the amount of processing channels. About 50000 of the devices will be installed in the Time Projection Chamber and Muon Chamber detectors in the ALICE experiment.
