The book is comprehensive, dealing first with reserves of anthracite and with related petrography. Culm – anthracite waste – features frequently in the book. Actual and projected anthracite mining are discussed in turn and exploration also has its due place. As would be expected, power generation has major coverage as do gasification and carbonisation. Coal-bed methane production from anthracite is described, and anthracite in calcined form is covered as well as anthracite in briquetted form. Use of anthracite in the metals industry follows with some emphasis on anthracite as an alternative to coke. Non-thermal application of anthracites as filters and adsorbents then features, and later there is a return to the thermal theme when co-combustion processes and oxy-fuel processes involving anthracite are quantitatively explained. The book moves on to carbon products from anthracites, anthracite-water and anthracite-oil combinations and hazards (spontaneous heating and dust explosions) with anthracites. The remainder of the book is concerned with domestic use and with ashes and slags. There is a very vivid illustration as an appendix

This book commences discussion at the industrial revolution and attempts to unfold the chronology of energy supply between then and the First World War. Coal features throughout the book and there is also detailed coverage of the early years of the oil industry. Political and social factors and the interplay of those with fuel demand are emphasised.

The book is focused entirely on coals which are sub-bituminous in rank. In the coalification sequence these fall between lignite and bituminous. The book gives details of properties of such coals including calorific values and Hardgrove indices and then gives examples of their use in power generation. Powder River Coals have a chapter to themselves. There is a discussion of carbon sequestration at a plant raising electricity with sub-bituminous coals, also accounts of their carbonisation and gasification. There is consideration of conversion to liquid fuels, and of hazards including spontaneous heating and dust explosions. There is also a detailed section on pricing.

Electricity production with peat internationally is covered, with some emphasis on Finland and the Republic of Ireland. Less developed countries covered include Rwanda. Peat in briquetted or pelletised form is discussed next, and coverage of peat in carbonised form follows. Steam activation of the carbonised product to make an adsorbent carbon features with some numerical details. Use of peat as a general-purpose solid fuel, in recent times and less recent, follows and there is description of peat fuel for locomotives. All of this is to the accompaniment of illustrations, figures and tables. In recognition of the importance of controlling sulphur emissions in combustion processes, the sulphur contents of peat from various sources are given and sulphur dioxide control measures outlined. Next come gasification and liquefaction, including producer gas manufacture and retorting. The role of peatlands in carbon sequestration has major coverage and this is seen as being a significant bonus for readers

The regions of the world are reviewed for their bituminous coal production and utilisation. These include Europe, North America, Australasia and China, Africa and the Former Soviet Union. Where the coals are Gondwanan this is mentioned, and details given. International standards applicable to bituminous coals are given, and throughout the book there is some emphasis on the vitrinite reflectance. A number of instances where the rank of a coal and therefore its vitrinite reflectance have been raised by the action igneous rock are covered. The International Committee for Coal and Organic Petrology (ICCP) features in the book, and its conventions for maceral nomenclature are applied. There is also coverage of bituminous coals in briquette form and slurry form.

This book analyses, country by country and region by region, responses to the worldwide demand for reductions in carbon dioxide emissions. The discussion is quantitative and contains many related calculations. There are discussions of how the respective countries have fulfilled their obligations under the Kyoto Protocol and detailed coverage of some of novel technologies for energy production with reduced or nil carbon footprint
